The sincere advice from J.D.Watson's speech in SUSTech

These following advice were taken from J.D.Watson’s speech in SUSTech that I copied from Qzone. (Actually I don’t know who organized these sentences.) Some of opinions seem to be known to everyone, but are easily overlooked. Most of these advice are about study and research, but I think some are also suitable for work. Emmm as for why I am writing in English, just as learning programming: You cannot learn python well if you only reading code without writing. However, no more than five people know the blog, hahaha……


  1. Avoid fighting bigger boys or dogs 避免与大男孩和狗打架
  2. Put lots of spin on balls 练好旋转球
  3. Never accept dares that put your life at risk 从不接受置生命于危险的胆敢
  4. Accept only advice that comes from experience as opposed to revelation 只接受来自经验而非启示的建议
  5. Hypocrisy in search of social acceptance erodes your self-respect 虚伪的寻求社会认可将侵蚀你的自尊
  6. Never be flippant with teachers 从不对老师无礼
  7. When intellectually panicking, get help 当陷入智力恐慌(才思穷尽)时,去寻求帮助
  8. College is for learning how to think 上大学是为了学习如何思考
  9. Knowing ‘why’(an idea)is more important than learning ‘what’(a fact) 知道“为什么”(想法)比学习“是什么”(事实)更重要
  10. New ideas usually need new facts 新的想法通常需要新的事实
  11. Think like your teachers 像你的老师一样思考
  12. Pursue courses where you get top grades 在你取得高分的课程中继续学习

  16. Choose a young thesis adviser 选择一位年轻的论文导师
  17. Expect young hotshots to have arrogant reputations 期待年轻就能快速地拥有傲人的名望
  18. Extend yourself intellectually through courses that initially frighten you 通过最初唬住你的课程去拓宽你的知识面
  19. Humility pays off during oral exams 谦虚在口试中有回报
  20. Avoid advanced courses that waste your time 避免浪费你时间的高级课程
  21. Don’t choose your initial thesis objective 不要选择你最初的论文目标
  22. Keep your intellectual curiosity much broader than your thesis objective 保持你知识层面的好奇心比你的论文目标更广泛
  23. Have a big objective that makes you feel special 有一个让你感到特别的大目标
